My cycling journey started when
I was 15 yrs old. During my younger years I was basically playing any sport that I could get my hands on. I was always thinking
that I would turn out playing golf or Australian football which is what I concentrated on whilst at school, however when I
got my first bike I knew that this was something that I could see myself during long term.
I
remember my first race in Queensland which happened to be the State Championships. Not knowing what style of rider I was or
what I was in for, I entered myself in the time trial and the road race. To my surprise I won the 15km TT and placed 2nd in
the U/15 road race. It was very satisfying knowing what I had done on such little knowledge and experience, not to mention
the bike which would have cost my Mum about $500 and I won't mention the fluro pink and purple colour scheme.
The next step was the Australian Championships which was such a thrill at such a young age. From there on in I knew
cycling was the sport that I wanted to dedicate myself too. As a junior U/19 I made the Australian National Team
to represent my country in the world championships in Plouy, France which was in 2000. I spent 2 months in Italy racing and
experiencing something that I lot of people don't get the opportunities to do. From there I continued to race in the Australian
National Team based in Italy from 2002, 2003 and then in 2004 I signed to a U/26 Italian team called Squadra Bibanese which
was based near Treviso north/east of Italy. I raced with this team for 2 years all over Italy and parts of France and Slovenja.
I managed to gain 23 top 10 results in my first season and was very hopeful to sign with a Porfessional team in 2006 until
I
I was very satisfied with the year and was very keen
for the coming season, but during my last year in Italy (2006) I had some injury problems which delayed my season and put
me behind the ball in my training and racing. I concluded my cycling in Europe for that season and returned back to Australia
for a year of domestic racing. 2007 was a change of scene for me and I made the change from Europe to America. I raced for
a Californian amateur team called Kahala La Grange. I gained 6 wins in only 2 months that I was there and realized that the
States was exactly where I should be racing. I caught the eye if a lot of teams but I had always heard of the Jittery Joe’s
team and the good connection between the team and Australian cyclists so I pursued this road. 2008 was my real pro team that
I had raced for however it feels like I have been doing this job for quit some time now and it funny when people call you
a “neo pro”. More to be updated :)
