San Dimas race report

Team Fly V/Australia dominates San Dimas stage race.

Ben Day wins stage 1 and overall, Alessandro Bazzana wins the sprints jersey and Jonathan Cantwell wins stage 3 and 2nd in the sprints jersey.
Stage 1. This was an up hill time trial which would see the winner place the yellow jersey on their shoulders at the end of the day. Ben Day was always one of the favorites for the tour and he proved his strength by winning in 12 min 42 seconds and he also set a new course record that had been standing for some years now.

Stage 2.  A rolling 15km circuit race which was a total of 140km. Attacks were launched as soon as the flag dropped and all teams tried to form some kind of a break away, but Fly V/Australia really controlled the race because we knew this was going to happen and we were ready for it. We rode the front all day and made sure the speed was high so no one could sustain any kind of break away. The race came down to a small group sprint and Day was in the main group and finished with the same time as everyone and this would continue him in yellow for the next stage.

Stage3. Was an action packed 75 minute criterium. We went into the race with the same direction as stage 2. All riders were present from the first corner and we rode strong and fast which stopped any attacks from going up the rode. Our main goal was for Ben to stay at the front and make sure he finished with the same time as the peleton. During the race there were 2 hotspot sprints which were worth 6 seconds for the win and we had to treat this has of it was the final sprint so no one on GC could gain any time on Day’s slim lead. Fly V/Australia lead the peleton with Day sitting in the right position and he then won the sprint to gain maximum time and this secured the tour on the road. Coming into the sprint Alessandro Bazzana and Cantwell worked together in the hope to win the stage as well as the tour. Bazzano went through the last corner as if he was on rails and leads Cantwell out perfectly so he could win the stage. Awesome job from all the team and bad luck to Phil Zajicek who crashed out on stage 2.

Tour of Murrieta- Race report

Race report of the Tour of Murrieta.

The 2009 Tour of Murrieta was a star studded field which hosted most of the Californian pro cycling teams to do battle for the 2 day omnium stage race. Teams included Team Fly V/Australia, Ouch Pro cycling team, BMC racing and Rock Racing which made for an exciting 2 day event.

Stage 1 started of with a typical 4 corner circuit which was always going to be a fast paced course. David Kemp (Fly V/Australia) and Daniel Ramsey (Time Pro Cycling) made one of the early attacks and they maintained a 30 second gap for the majority of the race. Fly V/Australia was always present at the front as for Kemp is known for his strengths in time trialing ability. The 2 riders out front worked very well together and with 2 laps remaining Chad Beyer (BMC racing) bridged across to the break and with him having fresh legs it made it hard for Kemp and Ramsey to hold on. Ramsey got caught by the sprinting peleton while Kemp managed to hold on for 2nd and Beyer took the victory. The bunch sprint was won by Rahsaan Bahati (Rock Racing) and Allassandro Bazzana (Fly V/Australia) followed in 4th.

Stage 2 was a 100km road race which really could have been classed as a kermese due to the size of the laps. The rolling 5km circuit again was super fast and made aby kind of  attack very difficult to stay away. With only a few points separating Team Fly V/Australia, BMC and Rock Racing they were all very careful about what was happening at the front end of the race, but with only 3 laps to go Floyd Landis (Team Ouch) launched an attack and Beyer (BMC) immediately followed with Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V/Australia) and Sergio Hernandez (Rock Racing) covering the move so all major teams would have someone in it. The gap grew to 30 seconds very quickly and the 4 were looking very promising to stay away when they came around for the bell lap. With only a kilometer to go Hernandez was the first to attacked for the solo victory. Floyd and Beyer were both spent after doing a lot of hard work in the break so it was up to Cantwell to chase Hernandez back. Coming into the last corner Cantwell finally caught Hernandez and out sprinted him for the win with Beyer 3rd and Landis 4th. Again Rahsaan Bahati won the bunch sprint and Bazzana 6th.

Overall omnium points.

1st Chad Beyer (BMC Racing)

2nd Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V/Australia)

3rd Rahsaan Bahati (Rock Racing)

4th Allessandro Bazzana ( Fly V/Australia)

5th Antonio Cruz (BMC racing)

6th Charles Dionne (Fly V/Australia)

7th David Kemp ( Fly V/Australia)

Just an update
Things are going along pretty well over here. The area where I live has some really good training loops for us 3 Aussie boys to do. One of our favourite one's is called Palomar Mountain which is where a lot of the big pro's come to train. Its around 50km from where we live and it was also the last stage of the Tour of California this year. You can climb up it 2 ways and both are around 16k either way, so she's a long one. Bernie Sulzberger and I climbed it last week and stupidly we didn't dress for the occasion, which means it was absolutely freezing as we approached the sommit and we couldn't feel our fingers on the way down, so not good for the braking capabilities neither.

Anyway we survived and today is another day. At the moment I am training approx 700-800km per week and the form after my illness is starting to come back. I guess the good thing about getting sick was that it was easy way to get down to race weight!

This weekend I will be racing the Tour of Murrieta which was the first race for me last year and I won the crit and the overall. Let's hope this year will be a repeat hey. After that the team and I will race San Dimas, then the Redlands stage race. All of those race results will be posted on cyclingnews.com and Ill do my best to keep you all up to date.

Hope things are well out there and your keeping the rubber side down.

Post Tour of California
Hi all,

Since the tour of California turned out to be a nightmare for me I haven't really done that much. I travelled back to a placed called Rancho Santa fe, California which is where myself, Bernie Sulzberger and David Kemp are living for the next month or so. I would hate to add up all the hours spent in this bed because of my illness from ToC. It really did hit me very hard. I have been on antibiotics for about 10 days and it was only just last Thursday when I could even look at my bike again. I feel so unhealthy and unfit from having a week off that you feel like you need to start all over again and all the time spent on the bike in the past 2 months has gone down the drain, "anyway that's how it feels in your head".

So on a lighter note, Bernie and I raced a local clubby in Long Beach on Sunday and to my surprise I managed to pull a win off as the race came down to the bunch sprint. I totally didn't expect to have this results after the past few shitty weeks I've had, so i'ts good news for me and the team to be on winning terms again. Also from my knowledge Ben Day was over in Las Vegas doing a 2 day stage race and he also won the tour there, well done mate.

Next step for me is to still recover and train to the best of my ability. I'm still on recovery medication and I should be ready to defend the Tour of Murrieta which is on the 14-15 of March.

On reference to the suburb that I'm living at right now! We have Phil Mickelson "professional golfer" lives only a few doors down and if you want to play golf in this area you need to have brought a huse in this particular county to even get a look in. So I thank the local cycling club "swaumi's" for hooking this place up :)

Also I wish all the best to a friend of mine Stephen Gillham who plays for Hawthorne football club, which he substained a knee injury in his last game against Carlton. Get better soon buddy!
